Journalist Ida B. Wells once said, "The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” It is no secret that America has systematically oppressed African Americans. From slavery to Jim Crow laws to police brutality, black people have been historically and continuously oppressed. Furthermore, to right the wrongs of racism and discrimination, I intend to use my platform as a journalist to bring to light the stories that go unheard and unwritten. I aspire to write articles that help the general public become aware of the racism that people of color endure. I am passionate about journalism because I believe that words have power. They have the power to uncover and expose problems in our society, such as the muckrakers in the Progressive Era achieved. I believe that in order to better our society and world, journalists must use their skills to shed light on injustices.
